How to Dose Macros, Micros, Iron (Weekly Schedule)

Aquarium plants need the right nutrients to grow and keep their color. Just like garden plants, they use nutrients to grow roots and leaves, produce energy through photosynthesis, and carry out everyday cellular functions. These nutrients are then divided into three main groups. 

  • Macronutrients: These are nutrients that plants need in larger amounts for regular growth. 

  • Micronutrients: These are needed in smaller amounts, but they are still essential for plant health. 

  • Iron: It helps plants produce chlorophyll, needed for photosynthesis and healthy green growth.

Why Macro and Micro Nutrients Matter For Aquarium Plants

Aquarium plants need a mix of macronutrients and micronutrients to grow properly and stay healthy. Each nutrient has a different job to do, and both groups are equally important for strong plant growth. 

Macronutrients

Plants need these nutrients in larger amounts. These are the main nutrients that provide support to everyday growth and development. However, the most important macronutrients include Phosphorus (P), Nitrogen (N), and Potassium (K). 

These nutrients support important functions in aquarium plants. Those include producing new leaves and stems, carrying out photosynthesis, and supporting root growth and cell development. If aquarium plants do not get enough macronutrients, they grow slowly, even lose color, or sometimes become weak and unhealthy. 

Micronutrients

Micronutrients are nutrients plants need in much smaller amounts. They are still needed for good health. Some of the common micronutrients include manganese, iron, copper, zinc, boron, and molybdenum. 

Even though plants need only a little of these nutrients, they still play an important role in plant growth, color, and overall health. A lack of micronutrients can lead to pale leaves, poor growth, and even a decline in the plant's health.

What Are The Three Different Dosing Approaches for Micro and Macro Nutrients?

1. Estimative Index (EI) Dosing

It is a popular fertilizer dosing method used in high-tech tanks with CO2 injection. It focuses on adding more than enough macros and micros throughout the week so that nutrients never run short. However, you need to do a large water change of around 50% at the end of the week. It helps remove build-up in the tank and resets the aquarium before the next week of dosing starts.

2. Lean Dosing

It is a planted aquarium fertilizer method that follows a more controlled approach than the Estimated Index (EI). Lean dosing does not add nutrients in excess. With lean dosing, aquarium plants are given small amounts of macros and micros regularly, sometimes daily or several times a week.

3. PPS-Pro

PPS-Pro is a popular fertilizer dosing method used in the planted aquarium. It is mostly used in CO2-injected tanks with a moderate fish population. It is a daily dosing system designed to provide aquarium plants with a steady, balanced supply of nutrients without adding too much at once.

The main idea behind the method is to dose small, equal amounts of both macro- and micro-nutrients every day. It helps plants get the nutrients they need for healthy growth and reduces the risk of nutrient deficiencies and unwanted algae.

When Do Aquarium Plants Need Iron?

Iron helps aquarium plants produce chlorophyll. It is a green pigment that plants use to absorb light and create energy with photosynthesis. When plants get enough chlorophyll, they grow better and produce healthier leaves. In most planted tanks, a regular fertilizer already provides some iron. However, in some cases, the high-lighting, fast-growing plants, or red aquarium plants can use up iron more quickly and benefit from extra dosing. 

The most common signs of low iron are pale or yellow new growth. It happens when iron does not move from the older leaves to the newer ones. So when a plant does not get enough iron, it affects the newest leaves, and the older leaves stay green. 

Do Red Aquarium Plants Need More Iron?

Red aquarium plants are linked with iron, but iron alone does not directly create red color. It's main job is to support chlorophyll production and overall plant health. That's why most red plants are also high-light plants. 

It means they grow faster and usually need more nutrient support. In these tanks, extra iron can support healthy growth and improve color when combined with the right conditions. Red plants usually need strong lighting, stable CO2, balanced macro and micronutrient dosing, and enough iron to show their best color. 

When Should You Add Iron To An Aquarium?

It depends on your aquarium setup, the type of plants you keep, and whether your regular fertilizers contain iron. In most planted tanks, iron is used up quickly, mostly when your planted tanks have fast-growing plants, high-lighting, and a lot of plant mass. 

As a general rule, iron is used 1-3 times a week in the planted aquariums. If you are using a separate iron supplement, it is best to start with a low dose. Then, after a few weeks, check how your plants are responding before you increase the dosing level. 

You can follow a simple approach to iron dosing: 

  • Start with 1-2 doses per week if your plants are healthy and you are only adding iron to provide extra support. 

  • Increase the dosing level to 2-3 times a week if you have a heavily planted tank, fast-growing species, or plants showing signs of iron deficiency. 

  • Make sure not to overdo iron. Too much can contribute to nutrient imbalance and can encourage various types of algae in some tanks. 


You Need To Create a Balanced Routine

A healthy planted aquarium needs more than just light and CO2. The aquarium plants can grow well with the right balance of micros, macros, and iron. And, there is no single schedule that works well for all the planted tanks. And, it all depends on your tank setup, plant load, and fertilization method. However, you need to start with a manageable routine and then make adjustments based on how your plants respond. It is important to keep a regular observation and balanced fertilization, as it can support strong growth, better color, and a healthier planted tank.
