Tap Water

The most common reason for high pH is tap water. The pH of tap water can vary depending on where you live and how your water is treated. If your tap water has a high pH, your aquarium will have a high pH as well. In case you plan to use pH-lowering products, don't rely only on the dosage instructions on the bottle. 

Every water supply is different, so the same amount of product can have different effects. So, test your water's pH and carbonate hardness (KH) before and after adding the product. It helps you find the right amount to use and avoid quick pH changes. 

Plant and Algae

Some of the live plants or algae can also raise your aquarium's pH during the day. When the plants get light, they use photosynthesis to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the water. 

As CO2 naturally lowers pH, when you remove it, it can cause pH to rise. The more plants or algae you have, the bigger their effects can be. 

Aquarium Substrate and Decorations

Before you try to lower your aquarium's pH, make sure to check what your fish actually need. In most cases, it is more important to keep pH stable than to reach a specific number, especially when your fish are already healthy and active.

What is The Role of Carbonate Hardness (KH)?

Carbonate hardness (KH) is also known as alkalinity. It helps keep your aquarium's pH stable. Consider KH as a buffer that prevents pH from changing too quickly. When the KH is higher, it becomes difficult to lower the pH. 

That's why pH-lowering products sometimes don't work for long. You can see the pH drop at first, but if the KH is high, it can return to its original level within a few hours or days. 

If it keeps happening, high KH is mostly the reason. Simply adding more pH-lowering chemicals won't solve the problem. Instead, you may need to reduce the KH first, or use a method that lowers both KH and pH. The most effective way to lower KH is by mixing RO (reverse osmosis) or distilled water with your tap water. How to Lower Aquarium pH Naturally?

Driftwood

Add natural driftwood, the easiest way to lower pH. When it sits in the water, it releases tannins that slowly make the water more acidic. The change is slow, but it is a good option for long-term pH control. Driftwood also provides water with a light brown tint that many fish from blackwater habitats naturally prefer. 

Indian Almond Leaves

Indian almond leaves are also known as catappa leaves. These release tannins that gently lower the pH in several days. They are most popular in shrimp, betta, and other soft-water aquariums. Because they provide compounds that support fish health. You can start with using one leaf, which works well for every 10 gallons of water. However, the exact effect can depend on your water chemistry. 

Peat Moss

You can place an aquarium-safe peat moss in a filter bag and add it to your filter or aquarium. It releases natural acids that slowly lower pH and carbonate hardness (KH). Peat loses its effectiveness with time, so you need to replace it regularly. 

RO or Distilled Water

Mixing reverse osmosis (RO) or distilled water with tap water is the most effective way to lower pH in areas with hard water. Because RO and distilled water contain very few minerals, they can also reduce KH and general hardness (GH). It becomes easier to achieve and maintain your desired pH. 

For example, when you mix 50% of RO water with 50% of tap water, it can roughly cut KH in half. As pure RO or distilled water contains almost no necessary minerals, it should be remineralized or even mixed with the tap water before you add it to your aquarium.

Before you lower your aquarium's pH, test the water first. You can use a liquid test kit or a digital pH meter. Even if test strips are quick and easy to use, they are not always accurate, especially when you need to measure small pH changes. It is also important to check your carbonate hardness (KH) before you make any adjustments. 

If your KH is above 8 dKH, your water has a strong buffering capacity. It means it can resist pH changes. In such a case, you need to lower the KH first by using RO (reverse osmosis) water or another suitable option before the pH can stay lower. 

After you make any changes, test the pH again after a day. It helps you know if the new pH is stable. If the pH returns to its previous level, avoid adding more pH-lowering products. Instead, check the KH. A high KH is usually the reason the pH won't stay down.
