1. Test Your Water

Before you make any changes, test both your pH and carbonate hardness (KH). Check out why your pH is low. Some of the common causes include low KH (poor buffering capacity), soft water, excess carbon dioxide (CO2), and natural acids from driftwood, peat moss, or decaying organic matter. Fixing the cause usually provides longer-lasting results than simply raising the pH.

pH indicates the acidity or alkalinity of your planted tank water. It is measured on a scale of 0-14. 

  • A pH of 7 is considered neutral.

The pH level is important, as it affects the health and comfort of your fish. There are different fish species that naturally live in different water conditions. So, some prefer lower pH, and others do better in higher pH.

How to Measure Aquarium pH?

Testing your water regularly helps you spot changes before they become a major problem. You need to test your pH as a part of your regular aquarium maintenance, or before and after making any pH adjustments. 

Also, keep in mind that when fish are stressed or unhealthy, and when breeding fish need specific water conditions, you need to test the aquarium's pH. Some signs that a sudden pH change may be affecting your fish include rapid breathing, erratic swimming, slow movement, or unusual behavior. 

What is Carbonate Hardness (KH)?

Carbonate hardness (KH) measures the amount of carbonates and bicarbonates in your aquarium water. These minerals act as buffers that help keep the pH stable and prevent sudden changes. When the KH is high, the water can resist the changes in pH. However, when the KH is low, the pH can rise or fall quickly, which can stress or even harm your fish.

If the tap water has a low KH, most aquarium keepers add crushed coral or other mineral-rich materials to increase KH and prevent sudden pH drops.

KH is usually measured in degrees of carbonate hardness (dKH) or parts per million (ppm). A KH between 4 and 8dKH (about 70-140 ppm) is a good range as it helps keep the pH stable.

You can measure KH using an aquarium test strip, a liquid test kit, or a digital water testing device. 

2. Add Some Natural Buffering Materials

Most materials can slowly release minerals into the water. Those include limestone rocks, crushed corals, aragonite sand, and Texas holey rock. When you add them, these increase KH, which helps raise the pH over time. 

3. Change Water Regularly

If your tap water naturally has a higher pH than your aquarium, regular partial water changes can slowly raise the tank's pH. Always check your tap water first to make sure it is suitable for your fish.

4. Increase Water Movement

Poor surface agitation can cause carbon dioxide to build up and lower pH. When you increase water movement with a filter outlet or an airstone, it helps release excess CO2. It can naturally raise pH. 

5. Check the Results

You just need to wait for a day or two after making changes. Then test the water again. Some of the natural methods can work, so avoid making multiple adjustments at once.

How Frequently Should You Test Aquarium pH?

It is a good idea to test your aquarium's pH every two weeks. At a minimum, you need to check it once a month. When you run a regular test, it helps you notice even small changes before they become major problems. Keep a record of your test results so you can easily track any changes over time. 

As pH can naturally change throughout the day, you need to test your aquarium at the same time each day, usually in the afternoon. It provides you with more consistent and accurate readings. You should also test the pH if a fish becomes sick or dies unexpectedly, when you start or finish a medication treatment, or when you notice changes in fish behavior or water quality. If the pH moves outside the ideal range for your fish, a water change helps bring it back to a stable level. 

Before Adding New Fish

Before you add a new fish, test your aquarium's pH and ask the pet store what pH range they keep fish. If there is a huge difference between the two, the fish can become stressed when moved to a new tank. Ideally, the pH difference should not be more than 0.2 units to help the fish adjust more safely.

Should You Change Your Aquarium's pH?

In most cases, you don't need to change your aquarium's pH if your fish are healthy and the water conditions are good. Even if a care guide says that your fish prefer a specific pH, don't rush to make adjustments just because your tank's pH is different. 

For example, if the recommended pH is 6.4 but your aquarium stays at 7.0, your fish can still do perfectly well. The most important thing is stability. Sudden changes in pH can be more harmful than keeping the water at a slightly higher or lower level. Also, most aquarium fish are captive-bred rather than wild-caught. 

They have been raised in different water conditions and are usually more adaptable than their wild counterparts. For most freshwater community aquariums, a stable pH between 6.8 and 8.0 is more suitable for keeping fish. You only need to adjust the pH if you are keeping species with specific water needs or trying to breed fish that need a particular pH range.
