How to Test Aquarium Water (pH, NH3, NO2, NO3)

It takes a bit of regular care to keep a freshwater aquarium healthy. And, it's absolutely worth it for both you and your fish. You just need to spend an hour or two each week to check and maintain your tank's water quality. Doing so can prevent many major problems and even keep your aquarium in good condition.

How Does The Nitrogen Cycle Work?

The nitrogen cycle is the process that keeps your aquarium water safe by breaking down fish waste. Fish produce waste that releases ammonia (NH3) in the water. Ammonia is very harmful to fish and even other aquatic life. 

To make the water safe, beneficial bacteria grow in the filter and on surfaces inside the tank. These bacteria first convert ammonia into Nitrite (NO2), which is also toxic. Then another type of bacteria converts nitrite into nitrate (NO3).

Nitrate is less harmful than ammonia or nitrite. But it can still stress fish, slow their growth, damage their organs, and make them sick if it builds over time. High nitrite levels can also encourage algae growth in the aquarium. And, the remaining uneaten food and dead plant matter can also add to the waste in the tank. 

Cycling a New Aquarium

It takes time for beneficial bacteria to grow when you set up a new aquarium. The process is known as cycling the tank. It usually starts after you add your first fish and can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months in larger tanks. 

Just letting a new tank run for a day or two is not enough to cycle it. When you add too many fish too quickly or overfeed a new aquarium, ammonia and nitrite can rise to dangerous levels. It is usually known as "new tank syndrome" and can lead to fish loss. It can even slow down the cycling process.

You don't need to be an experienced aquarium hobbyist to take good care of an aquarium. However, you do need basic knowledge of water chemistry and water testing to keep the tank healthy and avoid common problems. Testing your aquarium water is important when you first set up your tank, but it also matters in the long run. Regular water testing can help you catch problems early and keep your fish healthy, active, and stress-free over time. Here are some important water quality factors that can affect your fish and your aquarium's overall health. 

Testing Aquarium pH

pH can show whether your aquarium water is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. 

  • A pH of 7.0 is neutral. 

  • A pH below 7.0 is acidic. 

  • A pH above 7.0 is alkaline (basic). 

Most freshwater tropical fish do well when the pH range is between 6.8 and 7.8. However, some species may require slightly higher or lower levels depending on their natural habitat. Over time, the pH in an aquarium can slowly drop when fish waste, leftover food, and other organic matter break down in the tank. The easiest way to keep pH stable is by doing regular partial water changes that help refresh the water and maintain a healthier balance.

Testing Aquarium General Hardness (GH)

GH (General Hardness) measures the amount of magnesium, calcium, and other dissolved minerals in the aquarium water. It is sometimes known as total hardness. Most freshwater fish can comfortably adjust to a wide range of GH. 

So, in most cases, it is best to let them adapt to the water conditions instead of changing them regularly. If you are keeping or breeding fish that need very soft or very hard water, you can change your aquarium's pH or hardness with chemical additives. However, regular adjustments can cause unstable water conditions that can stress your fish. 

If your tap water is too hard or too soft, you can use RO (reverse osmosis) water or deionized water. After that, add the appropriate minerals to restore a suitable GH level for your fish.

Testing Aquarium Water For Ammonia

Ammonia (NH3/NH4) is the most important water parameter to test because it is highly toxic to fish. It usually comes from fish waste, but it can also build up from uneaten food, decaying plant matter, and poor tank maintenance. Ammonia problems are very common in new aquariums that are not fully cycled. The reason is that there are not enough beneficial bacteria to break down the waste. It can even rise if you add too many fish too quickly, overfeed the tank, and use weak or insufficient filtration. In aquarium water, ammonia can exist in two forms: 

  • NH3 (free ammonia): the more toxic form

  • NH4 (ammonium): the less harmful form

Most aquarium test kits can measure total ammonia. It includes both NH3 and NH4 together. Ammonia becomes more dangerous when the water temperature is high, and the pH is above 7.0. At lower pH levels, more of it remains in less harmful ammonium form. The safe ammonia level for an aquarium is 0 ppm. Even a small amount can stress fish and damage their gills over time.

Testing Aquarium Carbonate Hardness (KH) or Alkalinity

KH (carbonate hardness) is also known as alkalinity. It measures the amount of carbonates and bicarbonates in the water. In simple terms, KH shows how well the water can resist when there are sudden changes in pH. KH is important because it keeps pH stable in your aquarium. If KH is too low, the pH can fluctuate more easily. It can stress fish and make the tank less stable. 

The good news is that carbonates are replenished through regular partial water changes, so routine maintenance can help keep KH levels healthy. It is also important to be careful when researching fish care online. 

Some fish species come from very soft, acidic rainforest waters. However, many of the fish available today are captive-bred and are raised in water with higher pH and alkalinity. So, if you try to copy wild water conditions, it is not always necessary. And, in some cases, it can even stress those fish. 

Testing Aquarium Water For Nitrite

Nitrite (NO2) is the next stage in the nitrogen cycle. Most beneficial bacteria in the filter and aquarium can convert ammonia into nitrite. So, if ammonia rises in the tank, a nitrite spike usually follows soon after. 

Even if nitrite is a part of the natural cycling process, it is still very dangerous for fish. Nitrite affects the blood's ability to carry oxygen. It means fish can slowly suffocate even when there is enough oxygen in the water. When fish are exposed to high nitrite levels, they can show signs. Those include quick breathing, weakness, gasping at the water surface, and gill color changing from bright red to dull brown or grey. 

Same as ammonia, the only safe nitrite level is 0 ppm. If nitrite shows up in your aquarium, it means that the tank is still cycling, overloaded, or not filtering waste properly.

Testing Aquarium Water For Nitrate

Nitrate (NO3) is the final stage of the nitrogen cycle. Beneficial bacteria can convert nitrite into nitrate. It becomes much less harmful than ammonia or nitrite. However, it does not mean nitrate can be ignored. If nitrate builds up over time, it can stress fish, increase the risk of disease, slow their growth, weaken their immune system, and even encourage algae growth.

Some tap water supplies already contain nitrate. So, it is best to test your tap water as well, especially when aquarium nitrate levels stay high even after water changes. 

Nitrate tolerance can vary with a fish's age, species, and overall health. However, nitrate levels above 50 ppm are generally not recommended for freshwater aquariums.

Which Testing Methods Can You Use?

Test Strips

These are quick and easy to check your aquarium water. Each strip contains special chemicals that change color depending on the water parameter being tested. They are commonly used to test pH, water hardness, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, chlorine, and phosphate. 

Drop Tests

Drop tests are the most popular and accurate way to test aquarium water. You need to collect a small water sample to test, add a few drops of a testing solution, and then compare the color change to a chart. It helps you measure the level of different substances in the water more accurately.

You Need to Test Your Aquarium Water Regularly.

It is important to regularly test your aquarium water. It helps you detect changes in water quality early, so you can easily fix problems before they affect your fish or plants. The main water parameters you should test in an aquarium are pH, KH, GH, nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia. If you have a planted aquarium, nutrient levels become more important. In that case, you should also keep an eye on phosphate, nitrate, and iron. These tests help you know if your plants are getting enough nutrients or if something is missing in your planted tanks.
